What do you think of widgets?
People often ask me what I think of Widgets/Gadgets. Here is my answer:
Is that Attention Management?
Vs.
It might not be as fancy and graphical - but I would argue it is far more useful.
Widgets are ok for interactive elements. But if you want to track information over time (e.g. RSS news, packages, auctions, stock prices, application alerts etc) then you need a more intelligent approach.

I think, to overstate the case for tractability:
- widgets are for the most part digital trinkets (think the equivalent of gifts for the highlanders of PNG)
- a useful point of departure is "desktop zen" http://www.avesh.com/blog/DesktopZenReducingVisualClutterOnYourDesktop.aspx
- on top of that only information that so deviates from the norm, that it is worthy of one of the remaining few seconds of life

I don't really like popup type notifications unless I hover over something. Too much like an alarm clock. I hate alarm clocks. Widgets are fun!
