Information Burnout - A generation of participants turning off

Mary Hodder writes:

I'm looking forward to hear her thoughts and feedback about Particls.

I'm concerned, though, about a few people who have responded to her post (either in comments or their own blog posts) saying 'Just turn all that stuff off'.

That's exactly the scenario we are trying to avoid with Particls - a worldwide user base of social participants turning off from information burnout.

Warning: This feed is not updating properly.

It's now 12:11 pm in China, on Thursday, 31 May. The last post visible on your web site is stamped 9:19 am on the 31st.

But get this: In Bloglines, your last post is your "Dangerous Moves" post from the 22nd and in Google Reader, it's the same post but with a different timestamp. Hence, both are missing the last SIX posts!!

Not sure what to suggest, but a week lag is hardly acceptable, especially since this has been an exceptionally busy week for you!!

Comment: The UI is pretty good, although I never see pop-up alerts (I'm set to "Send Only Important ...") Of course, the real question is how good your selections are. I wouldn't expect you to reach Amazon accuracy (as an ex Oracle guy, I know how much they've spent on their back-end technologies; you don't have this kind of cash), but it has to be good enough to keep users on the site.

I'm going to make a push for Particls at a presentation I'll be giving on the 9th to the Qingdao Business Leaders meeting. Virtually all expats, mostly on full packages or half-pat packages, in their 30's and 40's, and mostly Europeans. (I'm an American; actually, I'm a Californian, native Angeleno, Silicon Valley refugee.) It will be interesting to see how well they respond to Particls.

This is the type of audience that would not likely have a reader and probably rarely (if ever) goes to blog sites. Kind of like your "Mom" target audience, but the difference being that these guys (and it's 95% male) are fairly well-paid execs. You talk about attention: Let's face it, execs have the attention span of a gnat.

I'll zap you feedback after I give my presentation -- and I'll encourage those who accept my challenge to use Particls to participate in this forum. I suspect it would be the first blog where they've given a comment.

There's the rub. How does something "know" what any one person needs? How can any filter be effective without a significant amount of set up and administration?

Interests change over time, sometimes rather dramatically. Heck, even something as simple Google News alerts give me more stories I don't care about than those I do for some of my keywords.

Unless you include some Briggs-Meyers personality set up in the filter, nothing will work perfectly. (Now I need to check out Particls...)

@David - thanks for letting me know about the feed mate - should be all fixed now. Thanks for also promoting Particls for us - it is very much appreciated.

@Jim - That's the secret recepie, tough nut to crack isn't it :) But this is indeed the problem we are trying to solve and by all accounts users are very happy with how we have done so far.
